So it's begun. This year's Verbier Ride is officially open for play. Here's the report for the 25th of February - the first day:
The first day of the Verbier Ride 2002 turned into a chilled-out jammin' session off the Big Air kickers in La Chaux terrain park. The riders congregated around midday-ish above the main jump and spent the best part of the next five hours entertaining the crowd with an array of mind-blowing flips, spins and grabs. Nick Drexall, Pat Sharples, Jason Schutt and Glenn Parsons were going huge, pulling off Rodeo 5's and Corked Seven's. Chris Southwell pulled off probably the trick of the day - a switch rodeo seven on his board - and stomped the landing. Awesome stuff!
The rails were given a good seeing to, though to be fair they did bite back a couple of times as well. Nick and Glen, along with a boarder in army fatigues, all rode out the 20 foot grind.
So a great start to this year's event. Very chilled and a nice relaxed opener, before the serious stuff kicks off tomorrow. Tuesday sees the Big Mountain competition and it promises to be huge. Mont Gele is going to be the venue and its steep faces, enormous cliffs and narrow chutes are going to put this international field through even their very impressive paces.
Check back here from tomorrow evening to find out what unfolds in what promises to be one of the most amazing freeride spectacles of the season!
