A word from Warren Smith (Organiser):
"The weather tried to beat our arses, we retaliated!"
The Verbier Ride this year was a lot of hard work battling
against the odds to try and organise an event that brought
together many communities in Freeride and Freestyle competition.
We managed to run an exciting Skier/Boarder/Tele X event on
the Wednesday with storm weather that brought a bit of extra
snow for the Freeride on Thursday. Unfortunately the Big Air
could not take place due to the bad weather putting our time
schedules way, way back. The Big Air has been re-scheduled
to the first week in April. So watch this space... It was
great to welcome the IFSA to the RIDE and with it their high
level of professionalism. Bernie Schulke, a Chamonix Guide
and representative of the IFSA, was a great help with pulling
it all together.
Quote from Francine Moreillon
(1998, 1999 World Extreme Champion)
"When I heard that Verbier was going to be the host
of the British Freeride Championships, I guess like most of
the people around, I thought: what kind of skiing is
that going to be?
But as a judge, I must say I
was very impressed by the level of skiing. Freeriders from
all over Europe and Australasia were there to prove that the
skier who would win the British champion title wasn't a Pommy!!"
We saw some huge back and front flips, some very solid and
fluid skiing and very creative lines. By the end, all the
judges agreed without a doubt on the victorious skiers' run
of the day. For sure, this contest had international values
in both the skiers and the snowboarders fields.
Well done all of you and see you next year!
Quote from Matt Reardon
(Fischer International Freeride Team)
"The Verbier Ride comp came off last week with no shortage
of 60ft backflips, skiercross carnage, austrian domination
mixed down nicely with a cool vodka redbull. The vibe was
kickin on the skiercross day even though the weather
was kickin our arse, with gale force blizzard winds...
but that's freeride and we'll have a good time anywhere. The
talent roster that arrived to throw down on the freeride day
was out of hand and it was a good surprise to see the weather
open up all day just so we could see from the judges platform.
There was plenty of fresh pow laid down for the boys to huck
and chuck but fluidity won the comp. The ladies charged the
course with style and a sick display from a few crazy telemarkers
made the day interesting. All in all the comp was smooth...the
vibe was insane...the red bull amped us all for the after
party...and everyone teed off in true freeride spirit. This
comp has a huge future to become of the premiere freeride
competitions on the IFSA circuit".
